A monograph on Monad's first nine months of on-chain trading, measured swap-by-swap from NullTerminal's own on-chain index. Oct 20, 2025 – Jul 23, 2026. Data as of July 23, 2026.
For its first nine months, Monad settled a block every 400 milliseconds — 59.4 million times, without ever drifting more than a rounding error. Today, with the MIP-12 hard fork, that heartbeat quickened to 300ms. Before the 400ms number slides into the changelog, this is a full accounting of what its decentralized exchanges did: $9.48 billion of volume across 39.1 million trades in 2,210 tokens.
Block time is the heartbeat of a chain. We measured Monad's as elapsed seconds divided by blocks produced, month after month, and it never wavered: 400 milliseconds, ±3ms, for the entire era. That consistency is a market-structure enabler — it is precisely why an on-chain central-limit orderbook like Kuru or Hanji can survive on Monad when it would be eaten alive on a slower EVM, and why an aggregator's quote can be fresh to the current block. As of July 23, 2026, MIP-12 tightens the consensus voting cycle to 300ms — a 25% cut that lifts throughput from 2.5 to 3.33 blocks per second.
Ten exchanges carried the era, unevenly. Uniswap v4 alone settled 60% of all volume ($5.70B) as the deep reservoir for MON, ETH and BTC pairs. The Kuru central-limit orderbook took second at $2.06B — proof a CLOB can thrive on a general-purpose EVM once blocks are fast enough. Capricorn ranks 5th by dollars but 2nd by trade count: eight million tiny memecoin fills averaging $40. The newest prop-AMMs (Hanji, Metric, LFJ POE) are small by volume but carry the largest average trades on the network.
Volume opened at a sprint — $551M in the launch week of November 27, 2025, capped by a single day (Nov 26) with 618K trades and $164M in twenty-four hours — then settled into a durable $150M–$400M weekly rhythm that held for eight straight months after the airdrop farmers left. A chain that keeps a quarter-billion dollars a week trading long after the incentives cool is a chain with real users.
Wrapped MON is the gravity well, trailed by a wall of stablecoins and wrapped majors. Thirty-three curated assets account for 98.3% of every dollar traded — the tell of a maturing chain.
Strip away the 33 blue chips and 2,177 memecoins and long-tail launches remain — together less than 2% of all volume, yet roughly one in seven trades on the entire chain: 5.9M fills of churn. When a swap costs almost nothing and settles in under half a second, the rational play for a degenerate is to trade constantly. CHOG is the flagship by dollars ($23.2M); by raw trade count, MONI (706K fills) and MONSHI (653K) reign, both at about a dollar a trade.
Nine months proved three things: that a general-purpose EVM can host a real central-limit orderbook (Kuru's $2B is the receipt); that sub-second blocks change trader behavior in kind, enabling a memecoin churn layer impossible on a slow chain; and that Monad's volume is sticky, outliving its own airdrop. The 400ms era ends with an upgrade. Everything here happened at 2.5 blocks per second; the next chapter runs at 3.33.
All figures are aggregated from NullTerminal's on-chain index of Monad mainnet DEX swaps (39.1M fills across 10 venues, 2,210 tokens), snapshotted July 23, 2026. Volume is USD notional at time of trade. Block time is measured as elapsed seconds ÷ blocks produced per window. "Curated" = the 33 tokens on the official Monad token list; "memecoin / long-tail" = every other traded token. Block-time upgrade per Monad MIP-12. This is a point-in-time report; numbers grow as the chain does.
